Presently I got up and dressed, stuck my violin under my jacket, and went out into the street to try luck. I wandered about for an hour, looking for a likely spot, feeling as though I were about to commit a crime. Then I stopped at last under a bridge near the station and decided to have a go.
I felt nervous and shaky. It was the first time, after all. I drew the violin from under my coat like a gun. It was here, in Southampton, with trains rattling overhead, that I was about to declare myself. One moment I was part of the hurrying crowds. The next I stood apart, my back to the wall, my hat on the pavement before me, the violin under my chin.
The first notes I played were loud and raw, like a declaration of protest(抗议), then they settled down and began to run more smoothly and to stay more or less in tune. To my surprise I was neither arrested nor told to shut up. Indeed, nobody took any notice at all. Then an old man, without stopping, secretly threw a penny into my hat as though getting rid of some guilty evidence.
I worked in the streets of Southampton for several days, gradually gaining the truths of the trade: it was not a good thing for example, to let the hat fill up with money; the sight could discourage the passers-by; nor was it wise to empty it completely, which could also confuse them, giving them no hint (提示,暗示) as to where to drop their money. Placing a couple of pennies in the hat to start the thing going soon became an effective way. Make sure, between tunes, to take off the cream, but always leave two pennies behind.
Old ladies were most generous, and so were women with children, shop girls and barmaids. But never a man with a bowler hat (礼帽), briefcase or dog; respectable types were the meanest of all, except for retired army officers, who would bark “ Why aren’t you working, young man?” and then over-tip to hide their confusion.
24. When he first began to play, he expected ________.
A. to get into trouble B. to play better than he did
C. people to stop and listen to him D. to be told to go somewhere else
25. The first man who gave money ________.
A. was too busy to stop B. seemed to have broken the law
C. dropped the money by mistake D. didn’t want to attract attention
26. According to the author’s experience, what is the best way of encouraging people to give a street violinist money?
A. To play in different streets.
B. To leave a small amount of money in the hat.
C. To empty the hat at regular intervals.
D. To put all the money in the hat.
27. The author started playing the violin in the street because ________.
A. he had nowhere else to play B. he wanted to entertain people
C. he had to earn some money D. he wanted to try his skill
C
Maybe you often have arguments with your parents about clothes, homework, friends and many other personal things. But what’s going on when your parents fight with each other? Most teenagers must be sorry or even frightened when their parents fight. They might think their parents don’t love each other any more and that would lead to divorce.
In fact, it is normal for parents to disagree and argue from time to time. They might disagree about important things like jobs or major family decisions. They might even disagree about little things that don’t seem important at all—like what’s for dinner or what time someone gets home. Maybe sometimes parents can feel so strongly about their differences that it may lead to arguments. However, these arguments are often over quickly. Parents may apologize and make up, and the family gets back into its usual way.
As a family member, you should find out what it really means when your parents fight. When your parents get upset with each other, they might cry or say things they don’t really mean. Most people lose their cool now and then, so if your parents are fighting, don’t worry too much about it. Try to find a good way to solve it.
If your parents’ fight really bothers you, you might find it hard to sleep or go to school. If this happens, try talking to one or both of your parents about their behaviors. They may not even realize how upset you are until you tell them how their arguments affect you. You can also tell other relatives, a teacher or a friend.
Just remember that no family is perfect and arguments are common in every family.
28. What does the underlined part “make up” mean?
A. 组成 B. 和解 C. 弥补 D. 化妆
29. The author believes that the fights between parents are usually ________.
A. sad B. seldom C. ordinary D. happy
30. What should you do when your parents fight?
A. Keep silent and begin to do your homework.
B. Be angry with your parents and shout at them.
C. Talk to your parents and let them know your feeling.
D. Go to school or tell other friends if it’s hard for you to sleep.
31. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. You should never argue with your parents.
B. Parents’ fight always last for a long time.
C. Don’t tell others about your parents’ fight.
D. Parents might fight over small things.
D
Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet… We are surrounded by the word “diet” everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically.
Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale(秤) instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word “diet” in food labels.
On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don’t have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle.
The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients(营养成分). Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemical that go into diet products are potentially dangerous.
Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological harm that comes from using them.
32. From Paragraph 1, we learn that ________.
A. diet products fail to bring out people’s potential
B. people have difficulty in choosing diet products
C. diet products are misleading people
D. people are fed up with diet products
33. One psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to _______.
A. try out a variety of diet foods B. hesitate before they enjoy diet foods
C. pay attention to their own eating habits D. watch their weight rather than their diet
34. In Paragraph 3, “gain comes without pain” probably means ________.
A. losing weight is effortless B. it costs a lot to lose weight
C. diet products bring no pain D. diet products are free from calories
35. Diet products indirectly harm people physically because such products ________.
A. are over-consumed B. lack basic nutrients
C. are short of chemicals D. provide too much energy
