It’s hard to talk to dad sometimes. His silence about his feelings and thoughts made him mysterious and hard to see through. You could never break his hard shell and get to know him. And he seemed to want to stay that way too.

But a year ago when my relationship with my wife and career took a hit. I needed my dad to pull back the curtain so I could see him as real and accessible. I was facing serious problems and I wanted to know whether he had faced them before and how he had found his way, because I felt like I had lost mine. In desperation, it occurred to me that sending an email might be the key, so I wrote him one, telling him about my regrets and fears, and I asked him to answer, if he felt like it.

Two weeks later, it showed up in my inbox: a much-thought, three-page letter. Dad, a 68-year-old retired technologist and grandfather of four, had carefully considered my message, and crafted a response. He mentioned his lost love, the foolish mistake he made in career and the stupid pride he had between him and his parents. He comforted me that “life will still find its right track despite many of its twists and turns.”

I closed the email and started to cry, because I wished I had opened up earlier but was grateful it wasn’t too late. I cried because at 33, in the midst of my own struggles, his letter instantly put me at ease. And I cried because in the end, it was so simple: I just had to hit “Send.”

We’ve since had many email exchanges. This increasing communication opened a door into his world. My problems haven’t been magically solved, but getting to know my dad better has made the tough thing more manageable and life sweeter. It’s hard to talk to dad sometimes, but I’m glad I found a

  way to talk to mine.

  C

Exactly five years ago, on New Year’s Eve, I was invited to a children’s ball by a man high up in the business world, who had his connections, his circle of acquaintances, and his close friends. So it seemed as though the children’s ball was merely an excuse for the parents to come together and discuss matters of interest to themselves, quite innocently and casually.

I was an outsider, and, as I had no special matters to air, I was able to spend the evening independently of the others. There was another gentleman present who like me had just stumbled upon this affair of domestic happiness. He was the first to attract my attention. His appearance was not that of a man of noble birth. He was tall, rather thin, very serious, and well dressed. Obviously he had no heart for the family celebration. The instant he went off into a corner by himself the smile disappeared from his face, and his thick dark brows knitted into a frown(皱眉). He knew no one except the host and showed every sign of being bored to death, though bravely keeping the role of thorough enjoyment to the end. Later I learned that he was a provincial, had come to the capital on some important business, had brought a letter of recommendation to our host, and our host had taken him under his protection, not at all with love. It was merely out of politeness that he had invited him to the children’s ball.

They did not play cards with him. They did not offer him cigars. No one entered into conversation with him. Possibly they recognized the bird by its feathers from a distance. Thus, my gentleman, not knowing what to do with his hands, was forced to spend the evening stroking ( 抚摸) his beards. His beards were really fine, but he stroked them so eagerly that one got the feeling that the beards had come into the world first and afterwards the man in order to stroke them.

  28. According to the author, what’s the purpose of the children ball?

  A. To offer children a place to meet.

  B. To make parents meet and socialize.

  C. To please all the guests invited.

  D. To welcome a very important guest.

  29. What does the underlined part “stumbled upon” in the second paragraph mean?

  A. Happened to attend. B. Settled.

  C. Intended to conduct. C. Arranged.

  30. Why was the gentleman unhappy?

  A. He wasn’t well off enough. B. He was from the countryside

  C. He failed to develop his trade. D. He wasn’t really welcome.

  31. Why does the author mention the gentleman’s stroking his beards in Paragraph 3?

  A. To show his good behavior.

  B. To expose his weakness.

  C. To stress his embarrassment.

  D. To express his interest.

  D

Digital technology—email and smart phones especially—has vastly improved workers’ ability to be productive outside of a traditional office. Even so, most white-collar work still happens in an office. One reason is that, according to findings of a new survey(调查)of office workers conducted by Wakefield Research for the IT company Citrix, most bosses are doubtful about remote working. Half of the workers say their boss doesn’t accept it and only 35 percent say it’s tolerated.

Skeptical bosses will likely have their doubts reinforced ( 加深)by the same survey, which shows that 43 percent of workers say they’ve watched TV or a movie while “working” remotely, while 35 percent have done housework, and 28 percent have cooked dinner.

It is true, however, that working at home makes people much more efficient, because it allows workers to take care of annoying housework while still getting their jobs done. It’s much faster, for example, to shop for groceries at a quarter to three than to stand in line during the after-work rush.

The fact that such practices remain officially unaccepted reflects how far we haven’t come as a society from the days when we expected every full-time worker to be supported by a full-time homemaker.

More broadly the Wakefield survey suggests that employers may be missing a low-cost way to give workers something of value. Sixty-four percent of those survey participants who haven’t worked remotely would rather give up some bonus in order to get even one day a week working from home. Under such circumstances, smart firms need to find ways to let their employees have enough flexibility to manage their time efficiently.

  32. What does digital technology contribute to?

  A. Promoting production. B. Hiring more white-collar workers.

  C. Conducting a new research. D. Removing bosses’ doubt.

  33. Why do some employers hesitate to allow remote working?

  A. To manage their workers better.

  B. To stick to their routine practice.

  C. To rely less on modem technology.

  D. To increase face-to-face communication.

  34. What seems to be most workers’ attitude toward remote working?

  A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Reserved. D. Disapproving.

  35. What does the author suggest smart firms do?

  A. Shorten their office hours.

  B. Give employees a pay raise.

  C. Adopt flexible work patterns.

  D. Reduce their staff’s workload.

  第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)

  根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

How to Communicate With a Deaf Person

Communicating with a deaf person doesn’t have to be as difficult as it might seem. The trick is to be patient, straightforward, and to remember that deaf people communicate visually.

  Method 1: Starting Your Conversation

36 You can do this by moving into the person’s field of vision and waving from a polite distance, or by tapping the person gently on the shoulder.

Position yourself carefully. Make sure that the light in the room is shining directly onto your face, and that you’re not standing with your back to a light. 37

Find out how the person prefers to communicate. Some deaf people are better lip-readers than others. Some deaf people may prefer to write back and forth or to use an interpreter. Man interactions between the deaf and the hearing require a combination of these methods. 38

  Method 2: Communicating through Lip-reading.

Keep your sentences simple and use plain language. 39 The more complex your phrasing and vocabulary, the more likely your deaf companion is to miss something.

When someone else is speaking, don’t turn away from the deaf person in your group. 40

You don’t have to look at the deaf person while someone else is talking, but try to make sure your face is visible.

  A. Get the person’s attention.

  B. It’s important not talk too quickly.

  C. Or, they’ll miss parts of the conversation.

  D. If so, it’ll make them feel left out of the conversation.

  E. Stand directly in front of the person, at a normal distance.

  F. The best way to know which methods are most effective is to ask.

  G. Try not to be too difficult when using your words in the beginning.
