It took nearly one hundred firefighters seven hours to put out the terrible fire, and not before the fire burnt down what people are saying was the largest house in Dallas.

Local police said the fire broke out at about 1:00 a.m. in the very rich neighborhood of Preston Hollow. The homeowner and his wife run away from the burning house after waking up and smelling smoke. A new study has found that social media could be having effects on the sleep of young adults.

They found that young people who often use social media are more likely to suffer from sleep disorders than those who use social media less.

The researchers set out to examine the connection between social media use and sleep among young adults. Levenson, who led the study, noticed that these young adults are possibly the first "generation to grow up with social media."

The researchers wanted to find out how often young people used social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Histogram, etc. For the study, they gave questionnaires to nearly 1,800 adults, aged 19 to 32. On average, members of the study group used social media sites one hour a day. They also "visited various social media accounts 30 times per week."

Thirty percent of the study's participants(参与者) reported having serious problems with sleeping. Those people who used social media a lot were three times more likely to have a sleep disorder. And those who spent the most time on social media were two times as likely to suffer from sleep disorders.

Levenson said the number of times a person visits social media is a better predictor(预测) of sleep problems than overall time spent on social media. If this is true, she adds, then practices that stop such behaviors may be most effective.

Do you usually go Dutch(AA制) when you take someone out to dinner? Do you expect your date to pay for the whole meal?

Many people say that as long as there's love, money doesn't matter much. But this might change when the relationship gets serious and it is related to the money borrowed from the bank, the family present accounts and debt.

A survey among 8 million couples in the UK suggested that 44% of married couples don't know exactly what their partner earns. An astonishing 23% actively try to keep their finances(资金) secret from their partners. About 38% of them are open to each other. Another 12% refuses to tell the truth.

British relationship expert Russell says: "It’s very difficult to talk about money. Often there’s guilt, there’s shame. To start those conversations is difficult. Money can be about how we value ourselves, how we feel valued. It’s not just a simple case of talking about hard cash."

So if you are in a couple, it might be a good idea to check if you both are on the same page about money before bills pile up on the kitchen table and love flies out of the window. When moving in together, couples should not only talk about their personal habits but also about their financial ones.

Russell has a word of advice: "Accept the fact that in your relationship you might do money differently – there might be a spender or a saver. It’s very attractive if your partner does things differently to say they’re wrong. Do it differently but plan it well."

And now, back to that date. Would you be bored with someone who was attractive but expected you to pay the bill by yourself? There's food for thought.

  32. How many people are very careful not to let their partner know their income?

  A. About 3.5 million. B. About 3 million.

  C. About 1.9 million. D. About 0.96 million.

  33. When they have to tell their partner they don't earn much money, some people might feel

  __________.

  A. ashamed B. frightened C. pleased D. tired

  34. According to relationship expert Russell, what should people do no matter whether they are savers or spenders?

  A. They should value themselves about spending money.

  B. They should have a plan about money.

  C. They should talk more about their personal spending habits.

  D. They should spend money differently.

  35. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

  A. Problems from Money B. How to Be Good Couples

  C. True Love Means Money D. Love and Money

根据文中第三段的相关数据,尤其是“An astonishing 23% actively try to keep their finances secret from their partners.”

根据第四段里“Often there’s guilt, there’s shame.” 故ashamed(惭愧的)最合适。Frightened(恐慌的)、 pleased(高兴的)、 tired(疲倦的)均不合适。

on the same page “在同一页上”即“意见一致”。尤其是倒数第二段最后一句话“Do it differently but plan it well.”

  The Atlantic Ocean

The Atlantic Ocean is one of the oceans that separate the Old World from the New. For centuries it kept the America from being discovered by the Europeans.

Many wrong ideas about the Atlantic made early sailors unwilling to sail far out into it. One idea was that it reached out to “the edge of the world.” 36.____________ Another idea was that at the equator(赤道) the ocean would be boiling hot.

There is so much water in the Atlantic that it is hard to imagine how much. 37.____________ For so large an ocean it has few islands. Also, it is the world’s saltiest ocean.

One of the longest mountains of the world rises from the floor of the Atlantic. This mountain runs north and south down the middle of the ocean. 38.______________

Several hundred miles eastward from Florida there is a part of the ocean called the Sargasso Sea.Here the water is quiet, for there is little wind.

39.______________ It is, however, not always a smooth and safe one. Storms sweep across it and pile up great waves. Icebergs float down from the far North across the paths of ships.

We now have such fast ways of traveling that this big ocean seems to have grown smaller Columbus sailed for more than two months to cross it. 40.________________ Airplanes fly from New York to London in only eight hours!

  A. Some sailors thought they could land at the other end.

  C. A fast modern ship can make the trip in less than 4 days.

  D. Sailors were afraid that they might sail off the earth.

  E. The tops of a few of the mountains reach up above the sea and make islands.

  F. Now we can get across the Atlantic much faster than ever

  G. Two things make the Atlantic rather unusual.

  36. D 根据该空的前一句话“One idea was that it reached out to “the edge of the world.”

  37. G 根据下文“For so large an ocean it has few islands. Also, it is the world’s saltiest ocean.”

  41. B 根据首句“I know little about my grandmother.”

  43. A 从“At the age of 75,…”

  44. D 根据后文信息“To collect them, workers have to squat(蹲) to walk; it would be hard enough even without the Hawaiian sun.”

  48. C 根据后文中提到的“I felt the same achievement of achievement my grandmother has after she gathers her nuts.”

  51. D 根据“The children love the toys, and the favorite gifts for adults are towels.”

  52. A “give away”意为“赠送,分发”;“give in”意为“屈服,让步”;“give up”意为“放弃”;“give off”意为“发出(蒸汽、光等)”。

  53. A 与前文中“leaving Hawaii with many bags and boxes”信息相对应,故这里是(空手而)“归”(return)。

  55. C 根据“I think we’re very alike.”和第二段中“even without the Hawaiian sum”可知此处C项最为恰当。

  58. C 固定短语have a great effect on…

  59. B 根据“she’s small”的暗示可知in size“在外形上”最恰当。

They filled their carts by fruit and vegetables and sheeps, and went to the market in the town. They came back in the evening and with some money and perhaps a present for their children. One possible version:

  Dear Jack,

Hello! I’ m glad to send you an e-mail to tell you that I ‘m getting more and more interested in English.

However, in the past I thought learning English just meant learning grammar rules and words by heart. I didn’t like to read or speak English , nor was I willing to practice dialogues with my classmates.

Now with my English teacher’s help, I’ve realized we should learn to speak English. I enjoy communicating with my classmates in English. I often read some English news or articles and look up some information on the Internet. As a result, I have made great progress in English.

In future, I will still read and speak more English. I hope I can sometimes talk with you in English online.

  (105 words)

  Yours sincerely,

  Li Hua
