Once again, I was in a new school. So was a girl in my class named Paris. I was tall and she was small. My thick, black hair had been recently cut short. Her natural blonde hair was long and looked great. I was awkward (笨拙) and shy. She wasn't. I couldn't stand her. I considered her my enemy. She liked me. She wanted to be friends.
One day, she invited me over and I said yes — I was too shocked to answer any other way. No one had invited me over to play. But this girl who wore the latest fashions wanted me to go home with her after school.
I got very surprised when she led me into an apartment building. She lived on the fourth floor in a two-room place with her mother, her stepfather, her two brothers and her sister.
When we got to the room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies — which was my next surprise and I had never played with them. We sat on the floor of a walk-in closet, laughing as we made up crazy stories about the Barbies. That's when we found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older and we both had wild imaginations. We had a great day that afternoon.
Paris had the whole neighborhood charmed. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines, the movie theater gave her free passes and the pizza place let her have free slices. Soon I was included in her magic world. We slept over at each other's houses, spent every free moment together. My dark hair grew out and I learned to love being tall.
Paris, my first real friend since childhood, taught me an amazing and very surprising thing about making friends: that your worst enemy can turn out to be your best friend.

B. How to dress and look fashionable.
C. How to become a good writer.?
D. How to make friends.
31. What does the underlined word “them” refer to?
A. Paris and her sister. B. Paris’ parents.
C. The Barbies. D. Paris’ neighbours.

Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while — then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. It is not the case in Asian countries like Korea and Japan. This can also be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us develop more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality easily.Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated warmly and kindly.
For the Americans, it is often considered friendlier to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!
32. It can be inferred from Paragraph 1 that America is ______.
A. a mobile society B. a restless society
C. a safe country D. a competitive country
33. The author of this text probably comes from ______.
A. China B. America C. Korea D. Japan
34. The underlined word “hospitality” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.
A. mean way B. generous behavior
C. good conditions D. nice greetings
35. What could be the best title of the text?
A. Americans’ Good Manners. B. Friendships between Americans.
C. Friendships between Chinese. D. Americans’ and Chinese’s Views of Friendships.

Dear Brad,
I'm very glad to receive your letter. And it's a pleasure to tell you something about how I spent the New Year’s Day holiday.
First, I had a good rest because recently I often felt tired as a result of my heavy study burden as well as lack of sleep and physical exercise. Of course, it took me one day to stay with my grandparents living in the countryside, help them do some housework and tell them what happened to me and my friends. What's more, I had a trip with my friends to appreciate the beauty of nature and breathe fresh air. What did you do in your holidays? I'm looking forward to hearing from you.Best wishes!
Yours, Li Hua
