At the end of every British summer I find myself praying for a proper winter, one that will allow a bit of fun: sledging, snowballing, snowman-building. I’m not very demanding; I don’t need amazing downhill skiing and the Cresta Run. What I want is a few days out with the kids. And, much as I like blue skies and sun in summer, I’d exchange it every time for frozen ponds, a hillside covered in fresh snow and ice hanging off the houses. Maddy, 11, wants the same and so, instead of waiting and hoping, we are going to make sure. We are going to Sweden.

Winter fun in Sweden is a bit more advanced than in most of the UK. They do snowshoeing, ice-fishing, snow house-building and so on. They also do lots of Father Christmas matters, which Maddy didn’t want: “I’m too old for that kind of nonsense, Dad.” Above all, what Maddy wanted was dogs with puppies. She’s not too old for that.

We flew to Lulea, a city at the top of the finger of Baltic Sea that reaches out to the north between Sweden and Finland, almost touching the Arctic Circle, then transferred, with some other winter-hungry families, to woodland houses by the sea. There was plenty of snow and ice, but the guides were keeping a nervous eye on the instrument for measuring temperature, which was dangerously close to zero.

“Normally, we are 10℃ below,” said Roger, our guide, who was also handing out our equipment for the days ahead: snowshoes, boots, gloves and so on. A holiday that provides all the necessary outfits will save you a fortune.

  31. From the underlined sentence, the writer wants to tell us _________.

  A. winter is much more fun than summer

  B. he likes playing exciting sports in winter

  C. he wants a few days out with the kids

  D. the activities in winter are in greater demand

  32. How did they go to the city of Lulea?

  A. By sea. B. By air. C. By train. D. By car.

  33. Which of the following best describes our guide?

  A. Experienced and old. B. Nervous and funny.

  C. Considerate and careful. D. Worried and amazed.

  34. What’s the best title of the passage?

  A. Winter Fun in Lulea. B. A journey to Finland.

  C. Ice-fishing in Lulea. D. Snow showing in Lulea.

Speed-reading is an essential skill in the Internet age. We skim over articles, e-mails to try to grasp key words and the essential meaning of a certain text. Continuous information from our electronic devices, it would be impossible to cope if we read word by word, line by line. But a new trend calls on people to unplug and enjoy reading slowly, listing benefits beyond intellectual development.

A recent story from The Wall Street Journal reported on a book club in Wellington, New Zealand, where members meet in a cafe and turn off their smart phones. They sink into cozy chairs and read in silence for an hour.

Some of these benefits have been backed up by science. For example, a study of 300 elderly people published by the journal Neurology last year showed that regular engagement in intellectual activities like slow-reading slowed the rate of memory loss later in life.

Yet technology has made us less attentive readers. Screens have changed our reading patterns from the linear, left-to-right sequence to a wild skimming and skipping pattern as we hunt for important words and information. The Internet may have made us stupider, says Patrick Kingsley from The Guardian.

Slow reading means a return to an uninterrupted, linear pattern, in a quiet environment free of distractions. Aim for 30 minutes a day, advises Kelly from The Atlantic. “You can spend half an hour pretty easily if only during your free moments — whenever you find yourself automatically firing up your laptop to check your favorite site, or scanning Twitter for something to pass the time–you pick up a meaningful work of literature.”

  35. We can conclude from the passage__________.

  A. People dislike reading in their daily life

  B. Reading through smart phones is a new trend

  A. To spare some time to check emails every day.

  B. To go through some sites to kill time every day.

  C. To chat with favorite persons on Twitter every day.

  D. To read literary works for 30 minutes every day.

  38. What’s mainly talked about in the passage?

  A. Fast reading is very important in life. B. Slow reading is necessary in life.

  C. People must read as quickly as possible. D. Life is reading for all the people.

In modern society loneliness can be seen as a social phenomenon and people can experience loneliness for many reasons. It is a very common, though normally temporary, consequence of a breakup, divorce, or loss of any important long-term relationship. In these cases, loneliness may result both from the loss of a specific person or from dropping out of social circles. The loss of a significant person in one's life will typically lead to a grief response; in this situation, one might feel lonely, even while in the company of others.

There are many different ways used to treat loneliness. The first step that most doctors recommend to patients is treatment. Short term treatment typically occurs over a period of ten to twenty weeks. During treatment, emphasis is put on understanding the cause of the problem, thoroughly changing the negative thoughts, feelings, and attitudes resulting from the problem, and exploring ways to help the patient feel connected. Some doctors also recommend group treatment a means to connect with other sufferers and establish a support system.

Another treatment is animal-assisted treatment. Studies and surveys indicate that the presence of animal companions such as dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs can ease feelings of loneliness or depression among some sufferers. Beyond the companionship the animal itself provides there may also be increased opportunities for socializing with other pet owners. Results of a study also suggest that correcting improper social cognition (认知) offers the best chance of reducing loneliness.

However, loneliness can sometimes play an important role in the creative process. In some people, temporary or prolonged loneliness can lead to remarkable artistic and creative expression, for example, as was the case with poet Emily Dickinson, and many musicians. This is not to imply that loneliness itself ensures this creativity, rather, it may have an influence on the subject matter of the artist and more likely be present in individuals engaged in creative activities.

  43. According to the passage, what can lead to loneliness?

  A. Running away from the school. B. Losing long-term friendship.

  C. A specific person’s marriage. D. A company’s closing down.

  44. What’s the purpose of the passage?

  A. To explain why people feel lonely.

  B. To introduce the cures for loneliness.

  C. To show results of a survey.

  D. To make people know more about loneliness.

  45. Compared with group treatment, what is the key to short-term treatment?

  A. To set up a support system by contacting other sufferers.

  B. To take anti-depressant medicine and switch it periodically.

  C. To change patients’ attitude towards loneliness.

  D. To raise the awareness of the cause of the problem.

  46. Why does the author take the example of Emily Dickinson?

  A. Because loneliness may contribute to arts creation in some ways.

  B. Because loneliness itself was present when Emily Dickinson wrote a poem.

  C. Because people can feel whether a person is lonely in his artworks.

  D. Because in the creative process, loneliness can be treated.

By 2050, half of the world’s population will live in the tropics—the relatively warm belt that circles the globe—according to State of the Tropics, a report released today. Rapid population growth, along with economic growth, means that the region’s influence will grow in coming decades, the authors of the 500-page work predict.

The project, first launched in 2011, aimed to answer one significant question: Is life in the tropics improving? To find out, the researchers analyzed environmental, social, and economic indicators collected over 6 decades. It finds that the region has made “extraordinary progress” in many areas. For example, more people have access to safe drinking water, and the number of protected areas is increasing. The tropics also have outperformed the rest of the world in economic growth over the past 30 years.

However, some challenges remain. Investment in research and development, for example, has increased cautiously, but tropical nations still invest less than the rest of the world. “As a proportion of GDP the Rest of the World invests almost four times as much in research and development than the Tropics.” concludes the report.

The report also includes a new analysis of how climate change will affect the region. Many plant and animal species are moving poleward in an attempt to stay within their preferred environmental conditions in the tropics, the authors write. However, some organisms may not be able to keep pace with the changing conditions, they predict. As a result, they can experience population declines or go extinct.

In addition, an expanded tropical zone also threatens health and safety issues, the authors warn. As regions become more suitable to insects such as mosquitoes and ticks, the spread of insect-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, and Lyme disease could rise, causing a burden to human health and the economy.

Bruna, a researcher, says he sees a lot to be concerned about in the report. “While we’ve made incredible advances in some areas, I think the risks for the tropics that are highlighted in this report are things that we really need to be concerned about.”

  47. What was the original purpose of the project State of the Tropics?

  A. To answer if life in the tropics is improving.

  B. To do research about environment, society and economy.

  C. To warn people of the problems in coming decades.

  D. To help the development in the tropics.

  48. What can we learn from the passage?

  A. Economic development in tropics has increased less over the past 30 years.

  B. Some organisms can experience population drop or extinction for climate changes.

  C. Rapid population growth contributes to the outbreak of infectious diseases.

  D. Great investment has been adopted in the research and development.

  49. According to the passage, we can infer__________.

  A. close attention needs to be paid to the risks for the tropics.

  B. all the plants and animals will live in the polar region in the future.

  C. health and safety problems will influence the tropical development.

  D. Bruna shows positive attitude towards the future of the tropics.

  50. Which of the following best describes the writer’s attitude?

  A. Critical. B. Optimistic. C. Objective. D. Subjective.
