Since 1985,Johnny Jennings,86,has been selling newspapers and magazines to a recycling center with his son to raise his savings account.By the time Jennings’only child was 17,he stopped joining his father, but the money they made covered the down payment for his first home years later.

Even though his son is all grown up now,Jennings hasn’t slowed down his efforts. In fact,he’s turned his recycling money into something bigger.

Jennings visits local churches and businesses to collect paper, which he brings to a recycling center for money. But instead of putting those earnings in his own bank account,he sends every dollar to Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes & Family Ministries.Once a year,he’11 give the organization a check somewhere between $10,000 and $35,000.By 2016,that reaches $400,000.

Jennings devoted himself to helping Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes&Family Ministries after his first visit there when he was 18.“When we went to leave, these three little boys grabbed me by the knees and said,‘Will you be my daddy?’”Jennings told TODAY.“And I said I'll do what I can. That took my heart, right there.”

These days,Jennings’recycling has turned into a community effort. After he’s made his own rounds recycling paper from businesses and churches,he’11 find more items waiting for him at home.Community members drop off other recyclables at his house so he can sell them, along with books, food, clothes, and other items to give away.

Recycling centers typically pay just one-half to three cents per pound of paper, but Jennings’visits have added up big time.In 2016 alone,he sold more than 400,000 pounds of paper and 51,000 aluminum cans, and collected more than 32,000 pennies.Over the course of 32 years he’s recycled more than 9.8 million pounds of paper, saving all estimated 79,000 trees in the process.“He is the last of a dying breed(种类),”wrote Jennings’friend in a Facebook post.“Our generation and the ones to follow could learn a lot from Mr.Jennings.”

Jennings says he’11 continue raising money for charity as long as his health allows.“If you got it to give, give it away,”he told CNN.

Do people really put messages into bottles?Has anyone ever found such a message? The answer to both questions is yes.

A Greek teacher named Theophrastus put messages in bottles about 2,300 years ago.He wanted to prove that the Mediterranean Sea was formed by water coming in from the Atlantic. The bottles floated from the Atlantic into the Mediterranean and proved him right.

During the rule of Elizabeth I of England(1558—1603),spies sent messages back to England in bottles.Because of this, the queen’s assistant opened every floating bottle found.Anyone else was forbidden to open such a bottle. In the late 1700s,Ben Franklin used bottles to show where the main ocean currents in the Atlantic are.His findings, and the charts he drew, were correct. They were so accurate,in fact, that they are still followed today.

In 1929 German scientists sent a bottle floating in the South Indian Ocean. The message asked the finder to record the date and place of the Finding. It asked that the note and boric be set afloat again. The bottle first landed at Cape Horn at the tip of South America. In 1935 it was picked up the second time, off the coast of Australia. The bottle had traveled more than 16,000 miles, possibly the farthest trip by a bottle.

The longest trip in terms of time took 150 years.A Japanese sailor sent a bottle floating in 1784 when his ship was wrecked on a Pacific Ocean reef.In 1943 it was picked up—in the Japanese village where he had been born.

Thousands of bottles are out on the waters today. The United States still uses bottles and other floating objects to study ocean currents. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service used them to study fishing grounds.Keep your eyes open. You just might find one.

28.Which of these events happened first?

29.What do we know about the bottle sent by the German scientists?

A.It was received by the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service.

B.It was opened by one of the Queen’s assistants.

C.It floated directly to the sender’s birthplace.

D.It was picked up twice during the long trip.

30.It can be inferred from the passage that_________.

A.the bottle sent by German scientists floated past Cape Horn without being seen

B.a Greek teacher helped show main ocean currents in the Atlantic Ocean

C.the Japanese sailor never saw his bottle again after he sent it floating

D.the message from the Japanese sailor was found by an Australian

31.What can be the best title of the passage?

A.Floating Bottles B.Study of the Oceans

C.The History of Bottles D.Scientists and Bottles

  D

When you’re out with a friend and take a photo of yourselves,do you know that you are also creating a work of art? Or that you are competing with Vincent van Gogh himself? Probably not.Your idea might be to show off your selfie(自拍)on WeChat or QQ,but you probably don’t think of the internet as a gallery or of yourself as an artist.

But the manager of London’s Saatchi Gallery,Nigel Hurst, thinks that the casual pictures we take of ourselves do have something in common with self-portraits by the great masters. In support of the idea, the Saatchi Gallery has a new exhibition called From Selfie to Self-Expression,which is running now until May 30.

It features well-known self-portraits from artists including those drawn by Dutch painters Van Gogh and Rembrandt. It also has selfies on show, which include one taken by US celebrity Kim Kardashian and another offormer US President Barack Obama with former UK Prime Minister David Cameron, according to the BBC.The gallery is even encouraging visitors to add their own selfies to the show.

Hurst is perhaps not being 1 00 percent serious. He isn’t claiming that a snap you take of yourself in your favorite restaurant can be compared with a self-image painted by Van Gogh. But he does make a serious point.Once upon a time,it was only artists who could make images of themselves. They were the only ones,as Hurst told The Guardian, who“had the skills, materials and tools to create self-portraits.”Today,however,we“all have that ability through our smartphones.”

And Hurst described the smartphone selfie as an example of“a transform in society using technology as a means of self-expression”.He told The Guardian:“The selfie generation is becoming the self-expression generation as each of us seeks to explore and share our inner creativity through the one artistic tool to which we all have access, the smartphone.”

32.What is the new exhibition intended to express?

A.A celebrity’s selfie is more likely to become a masterpiece.

B.Selfies are a better way to express oneself than self-portraits.

C.Smartphones have changed the way people understand the world.

D.Selfies have something in common with great artists’self-portraits.

33.What does the underlined word“those”in Paragraph 3 refer to?

  A.Self-portraits. B.Selfies. C.Artists. D.Visitors.

34.Which of the following would Nigel Hurst agree with?

A.Selfies help us master the skills used by earlier artists.

B.Every snap you take of yourself can have artistic value.

C.Self-portraits of great masters have lost their attraction.

D.Selfies offer people a chance to explore their creativity.

35.What is the writer’s purpose in writing this article?

A.To remind readers of works from some famous artists.

B.To explain the reason for people enjoying taking selfies.

C.To introduce a new exhibition of selfies and self-portraits.

D.To make a comparison between selfies and self-portraits.

As we can see, everyone seems to rush in their life, but you don’t have to be like that. You can be different. You can walk instead of driving in rush hour traffic. You can limit your time spent on your mobile phone, and if necessary, power it off.Your environment doesn’t control your life —you do.I’m not going to give you a step-by-step guide to moving slower. 36

  Try to do less.

Cut back on your projects,on your task list,on how much you try to do each day.Concentrate not on quantity but on quality. 37 Save smaller, routine tasks for later in the day,but give yourself time to focus.

  Have fewer meetings.

38 And they eat into your day, forcing you to squeeze the things you really need to do into small windows, and making you rush.Try to have blocks of time with no interruptions,so you don’t have to rush from one meeting to another.

  39

When you do the important things with focus, without rush, there will be things that get pushed back, and that don’t get done. And you need to ask yourself:how necessary are these things? What would happen if I stopped doing them?

Practice being comfortable with doing nothing.

One thing I’ve noticed is that when people have to wait, they become impatient or uncomfortable. They want their mobile device because standing and waiting is a waste of time.Instead, try just sitting there, looking around, soaking in your surroundings.Try standing in line and just listening to people around you. 40 .

Try these things out.Life is better when unrushed.

A.Start to put off or cancel the unnecessary.

B.Meetings are usually a“big waste of time”.

C.Avoid rushing to appointments or other places.

  D.It takes practice,but you’11 do it with a smile after a while.

E.The world likely won’t end if you don’t pass one of the examinations.

F.Pick no more than 3 important things or just even one,and work on those first.

G.But here are some things to consider and perhaps adopt,if they work for your life.

  B

第四段中,孩子问年仅十八岁的“Jennings: Will you be my Daddy?”

“He is the last of a dying breed(他这种人就要灭绝了”)这句话从朋友口中说出来,没有任何诅咒的意思,反而是表达了一种由衷的敬意,即:像Jennings这样的好人太少了,我们当代人和后代们都应该向他学习。

  C

M: Yes, I collect stamps and old match boxes. What about you, Samantha?

W: I want to learn to ski, but I’m too busy writing this book in my spare time.

  Text 2

M: Your bill comes to 35 dollars.

W: That can’t be right. I think you forgot to charge us for dessert. I think it was four bucks.

M: Ah, so I did. Tell you what: it’s provided free by the restaurant.

  Text 3

  M: Did my package arrive?

W: Yes, but it was delivered to your office.

M: What a pain! I’ll have to pick it up when I go in to work on Monday.

  Text 4

M: This is a very nice restaurant you have here. The lighting gives it a really lovely atmosphere. It’s a great place for a romantic meal or a business meeting.

W: Actually, we are planning to put in different lighting next month. The restaurant will have a brighter and more family-friendly feel when it’s all finished.

  Text 5

M: What do you think of my new sunglasses? They were on sale for only $150.

W: On sale for $150? I can’t imagine what the regular price might be! I don’t think I’ve ever spent that much on a single item before.

  Text 6

  M:May I help you?

W: Yes, I was trying to log in to the patient website, but it seems that I need an email from you.

M: Did you register when you were in the clinic today?

W: Register? I don’t know what you mean.

M: Did you give them your email address?

W: Well, I did four years ago, and again two years ago, but I never got an email from the doctor’s office after that. And I went in today for a checkup, but nobody seemed to remember me.

M: Oh, I’m sorry about that. Why don’t you give me your email address? I’ll help you get everything set up.

  Text 7

M: Will you look at that coming down? I thought today was supposed to be a warm, sunny day.

W: I know. Me, too. I left my umbrella at home. I don’t even have a coat.

M: Do you know how long it’s supposed to rain? Do you think we can wait it out?

W: Well, I have to pick up my son from school, so I can’t wait long. Let me check my weather app.

M: I don’t know if you can get service here on the phone.

W: Oh, I can. My phone is pretty reliable. Let’s see...it looks like the rain is going to last another hour. I’m going to have to try to get a taxi.

M: I have the company car today. Maybe you could use it to pick up your son, and I can get it back from you tomorrow before we start work.

  Text 8

M: So, we’re back in class at last. I didn’t see you around this summer, Mary. Did you leave Beijing?

W: Yeah, I told my parents I wanted to escape Beijing’s heat, so they asked me to go to Wuhan to help my uncle with his business.

  M: Wuhan? That’s even worse.

W: Actually, I didn’t go. I ended up in Xiamen. My uncle moved there at the last minute, and he asked me to stay with him there and help decorate his new apartment.

M: Did you find anything fun to do there?

W: Well, I did have some time to go to the beach, of course.

M: Wasn’t it unbearably hot there?

W: No, it was surprisingly pleasant.

M: Did you like the food?

W: It wasn’t terrible, but I must say that seafood isn’t really my thing.

M: That’s a shame! All that delicious, fresh fish, and nobody to appreciate it…

  Text 9

M: Why did you get home so late, Sara? I was worried sick!

W: I had everything timed perfectly. I sat in the coffee shop, waiting for Bus 55. It is supposed to leave at 4:45 sharp. I take it every day at that time because it arrives at the Waterson Station just in time to catch Bus 15.

M: And you lost track of time, didn’t you?

W: No, Ken, not this time. I was at the bus stop on time, and I was picking up my bag and getting to my feet at 4:35. I was two feet from the bus when it suddenly left!

  M: Ten minutes early?

W: Yes. So, I had to wait thirty minutes for the next bus. By then, there were no more buses leaving from Waterson.

M: How did you get here, then?

W: I walked. Can you imagine—me, a young woman, walking in the dark for an hour by herself?

M: And in this neighborhood! Next time, please call me. That was so dangerous.

W: I know. I’m lucky to be alive. What’s wrong with the public transportation in this city? Don’t they care about people who can’t afford cars?

M: We should write a letter to our local officials.

  W: And the newspaper!

  Text 10

DoorDash is a website and app that lets people order food to be delivered without having to call a phone number or find correct change to pay the driver. Many people would complain that ordering food for delivery was always a pain because you could never get through on the phone. DoorDash provides an easy-to-use menu and an ordering system for each restaurant in its network. You pay right on your smart phone. What is unusual about DoorDash is that you can track where your driver is so you know how long you have to wait. Best of all, the price is the same as if you order from the restaurant yourself! The people who work for DoorDash drive their own cars and keep their own schedules. But since they get paid per delivery, they usually get your food to you while it’s still hot! That way, they keep customers happy and make a nice wage as well! Most DoorDashers earn around $20-$30 per hour, which isn’t bad for a job that doesn’t require a set schedule. Many places like DoorDash because they don’t need to hire their own delivery workers or pay for things up front like a delivery car and gas. Plus, DoorDash gives businesses some valuable promotion and recognition.
