Customers chat, read the newspaper and order sandwiches and drinks at August First Bakery & Café in Burlington, Vermont, but there’s something different here. “I was here working on my laptop (笔记本电脑) when I looked over and saw that there was a sign that said ‘laptop-free,’” says Luna Colt, a student at the University of Vermont. During a recent visit, Colt was shocked that using her computer was against the rules.

When owner Jodi Whalen first opened it four years ago, she offered free Wi-Fi to customers. Students like Colt went there in large numbers and started typing away — and staying all day. “We saw a lot of customers come in, look for a table, not be able to find one and leave,” Whalen says. “It was money flowing out of the door for us.” That’s why Whalen decided there’d be no more screens. It was a gradual move. She started by shutting down the Wi-Fi two years ago. Then, the café banned screens during lunch. “A lot of people were bummed out,” Whalen says. “But we actually saw our sales increase.”

What’s socially acceptable when it comes to using a laptop in public? Luna Colt thinks it’s about how much money you spend. “You should buy something every two hours if you’re going to be here and just work all day,” Colt says. As long as you’re being a good customer, she says, there’s nothing wrong with working on a laptop.

Not quite, according to Whalen. “It’s less about how much a laptop user buys, and more about table space. Even if they think they’re a good customer because they buy food, they’re still here for long hours,” she says. “To walk into a place and see people looking at their screens with a blank stare, it takes away the community aspect of it — of you being in a place with other people,” Whalen adds.

  24. Why is August First Bakery & Café different?

  A. Customers are not allowed to use their laptops.

  B. Those who visit the café are often very strange.

  C. It offers unusual sandwiches and drinks.

  D. It is only open to university students.

  25. The underlined words “bummed out” in Paragraph 2 probably mean “_____”.

  A. grateful B. fortunateC. disappointed D. frightened

  26. We can infer from the text that Luna Colt _____.

  A. works part-time in Jodi Whalen’s store

  B. might not be popular with Jodi Whalen

  C. likes the food in August First Bakery & Café

  D. will not work on a laptop in public any more

  27. What’s the main idea of the text?

  A. It is good for our health to stay away from Wi-Fi.

  B. A café owner improves sales by saying no to laptops.

  C. A university student shows how to be a good customer.

  D. People are efficient while working on a laptop in a café.

  C

Increasing numbers of airports, especially in Europe, are promoting a “silent airport” idea. It is to reduce noise pollution , such as airport-wide announcements, without sacrificing timely and helpful updates of information.

International airports were once characterized by their high voices, competing gate announcements and so on.This is all changing.Angela Gittens, director general of Airports Council International (ACI), says there is a growing desire among airports and airlines they serve to “create a calm, relaxed atmosphere” without being disturbed by announcements.“Passengers can relax while they wait for their flight to board in the common airside lounges(休闲区), and food and drink areas,”she says.

In June, HelsinkiAirport in Finland----a country where the tourism slogan is “silence, please”-became the most recent airport to adopt the silent concept. As part of its commitment to quieting things down, announcement for flights are made only in boarding gate areas.

Lost track of time in the shops?

  Too bad.

Nobody’s going to call you to your flight, as announcements in all terminals will be made only in exceptional(尤其) emergency circumstances.

Heikki Koski , vice president of Helsinki Airport, says that improved flight information display system and interactive kiosks(交互式自助服务机) , together with advances in mobile technology, are changing the way airports communicate with passengers. At Munich airport, InfoGate kiosks allow for video-based face-to-face conversation with a live customer service representative in the traveler’s language of choice. Interactive signs, on the other hand, give directions at the touch of finger. Passengers can tap a “you are here” display to get directions and approximate walking time to their destinations.

Of course , an airport will never be as silent as a temple. There will continue to be a need for airport-wide emergency announcements along with boarding calls.

  28. What is Angela Gittens’ opinion on the silent airport concept?

  It makes airport noise-free.

It is intended for passengers’ benefit.

It has changed international airports’ reputation.

It has encouraged the catering industry in airports.

  29. What should passengers pay close attention to at HelsinkiAirport?

Their boarding time. B. Finland’s tourism slogan.

The shop’s opening hours. D. The “you are here ”display.

  30. Why is MunichAirport mentioned in the text?

  A. To show is popularity. B. To introduce Infogate kiosks.

  C. To prove Heikki Koski’s words. D. To be compared with HelsinkiAirport

  31. What is the best title for the text?

Silence, please. This is an airport.

Can airports be as quiet as temples?

Silent airports all around the world.

  Technology helps airports become interactive

  D

It is always the same minority of top students, usually sitting at the front, who raise their hands to answer the questions, while the others switch off. This deep-seated classroom habit is widening the achievement gap in our schools. According to the education expert Dylan William.

Some sort of randomization process is required, William long ago decided , and his usual solution is to write students’ names down on the lollipop(棒棒糖) sticks, the teacher then pulling them at random from a pot. No one can hide----everyone is potentially in the firing line. Over the course of one summer term, he put the idea into practice on a mixed-ability class of 12 to 13-year-olds at a school in Borehamwood. The aim was to involve every student in the lesson.

A further innovation(创新) –-- small hand-held whiteboards for each student---came as a direct result of an unforeseen problem with the lollipop sticks. Unable to show off their brilliance in front of the class, the regular hands-up group were getting frustrated, and had even started to become disruptive(捣乱).“the high-achieving girls were really struggling,”William says,“they are used to putting up their hands only when they know the answer. The random lollipop method was putting some of the high achievers into the unaccustomed position of sometimes not knowing the answers. ”

“It’s kind of embarrassing because I’ve got this reputation of being smart,” says Emily, after she has been caught out marking her disapproval by secretly removing her lollipop stick from the pot.Hence(因此)the mini-whiteboards.

“the idea with the mini-whiteboards is that the whole class writes their answers before displaying their boards to the teacher and each other. You can get an overall view of what the whole class thinks,”William says.“People are always pushing new technology and expensive ways of raising students’ achievement, but the fact is that this is something that every school could do.”

  32. Why did William decide to change the classroom habit?

  A. To make the classes interesting B. To mobilize the whole class

  C. To pick out high achievers D. To relieve teachers’ stress

  33. What does William think of the use of lollipop sticks?

  A. It will be popular with high achievers.

  B. It is mainly intended for 12- to-13 year olds.

  C. It gives everyone the chance to make their voice heard.

  D. It will greatly strengthen teacher-student relationship.

  34. Why did Emily take out her lollipop stick?

  A. To leave a mark on it. B. To show her smartness.

  C. To keep it as a souvenir. D. To avoid having her pride hurt.

  35. What purpose does the mini-whiteboard serve?

  A. To motivate students to learn better.

  B. To strengthen the role of lollipop sticks.

  C. To inspire teachers to use new tools.

  D. To cover students’ shyness.

  第二节:七选五(共5小题,每题3分,满分15分)

How much of your stress, disappointment, anger or worry comes from one little thing? Almost all of it comes from your expectations, and from wishing things were different. We build these expectations in our heads of what other people should do, what our lives should be like.__36__ When reality doesn’t meet our fantasy , we wish the world were different.

Here’s a simple solution: Picture all the expectations you have for yourself, your life, your kids, your job and the world. __37_A river or lake will also do. What happens to them? They’re carried around by waves. They float away. Let them be washed away by the clean waters, and let them go. Now live your life without them.

__38__ It means you accept reality as it is, and people as they are. Without expectations, you see things as they are. __39__ Or if you are, you accept it, and then let it go.

That’s not to say you never act. You can act in a way that agrees with your values, but never have an expectation of how the world will react to your actions. 40 Do good because you love doing good, and expect nothing beyond that.

Let the waters of the world clean us, and let us walk lightly in a world that is wonderful without our fantasies.

  A. And yet it’s not real; it’s all fantasy.

  B. What’s a life without expectations like?

  C. Don’t beat yourself up if you have expectations.

  D. If you do something good, you won’t expect praise.

  E. Take them from you, and throw them into the ocean.

  F. When things don’t turn out as we expect, we’ll get angry.

  G. It’s a life where you don’t need to be disappointed or angry.

It is really hard for me to say goodbye to you. I am grateful for your help in my English learning. Looking back on the years we spent together, what you taught me impressed me a lot. Without your excellent teaching, I wouldn’t have made such great progress in English.

I know that you like Chinese traditional culture, so I’d like to give you the Four Treasures of the Study as a gift. As you know, they are traditional writing tools. Besides, they themselves have also become works of art which are worth

  Collecting.

Now you are leaving China. I hope that our friendship will last forever.

Thank you again and wish you a pleasant journey.

  Yours,
